 Our History - Harmony Grove Baptist Church

According to official minutes written and signed by John Pruett (moderator) and Drury D. Roach (clerk), Harmony Grove Church was established in Union County, Georgia on December 18th, 1847. The minutes read, "We the following Presbytery old churchconsisting of Elders John Pruett, Drury D. Roach and William Pruett met according to request of different Brethren and Sisters and proceeded to constitute them into a church. First called for letters and received eight, Brothers Luson Spivy and Peter Flowers and Sisters Jane Spivy, Rodey Noblet, Roeny Spivy, Loucritia Spivy, Mary Flowers and Evaline Penland. They presented the articles of faith which was received and finding them to be orthodox proceeded to constitute them as a church by the name of Harmony Grove". The land for the church was donated by Peter and Mary M. Flowers. The church is still in the same place and has had the same name for over one hundred fifty years.

The first church burned in the late 1800's. A new church was constructed in 1898 by a country baptismmember affectionately known as "Uncle Dump" Nelson, who put the pulpit in the middle of the church, that is, on the long side. pastor thomasonThe unique pulpit, hand planed by Mr. Ben Akins, is still in use. A "Notice of the Dedication" was recorded in the church minutes on Wednesday, August 15th, 1900, (signed) Elder J.W. Parham, (moderator) and W.F. Fleming, (church clerk). The notice read, "The new Baptist church house at Harmony Grove was dedicated to the Lord in the year 1900. The dedication service was preached by Dr. S.Y. Jameson".
